Nexo (NEXO)
System: Nexo — Credit and Asset Management
Nexo is a custodial digital-asset lending and yield platform that allows retail and institutional clients to borrow fiat or crypto against posted crypto collateral and to earn interest on deposited assets via Nexo accounts. Founded in 2018, it combines an Ethereum-based ERC-20 NEXO token with a centrally operated web and mobile platform. The system boundary includes the NEXO token contract, Nexo-controlled on-chain addresses, and Nexo’s off-chain custody, credit, and interest infrastructure, while excluding external L1 or L2 networks and third-party asset protocols.

Token Functionalities
Value Distribution
- Buyback Entitlement (Discretionary but Regular)
Right to benefit from system-acquired NEXO tokens held by the system (buybacks into Investor Protection Reserve), affecting supply dynamics/utilisation.
- Direct Entitlement (Discretionary but Regular)
Right to receive a pro rata distribution (paid as interest) on NEXO token balances held on the Nexo platform, with rates set by the operator.
Membership
- Preferential Pricing (Hold-Based)
Right to receive better platform terms (e.g., higher yields, cashback, lower borrowing costs) by meeting NEXO holding thresholds via loyalty tiers.
- Usage Quota Uplift
Right to enjoy higher usage allowances (e.g., more free crypto withdrawals / gas fee coverage) at higher loyalty tiers driven by NEXO holding ratio.
Collateral
- Financial Collateral
Right to post NEXO as recognised collateral for borrowing within the platform’s lending framework, subject to platform-defined collateral parameters and enforcement through account-level liquidation mechanics.
System Attributes
Operating Model
Nexo’s core services (credit line + interest-bearing accounts) are provided through a centrally operated custodial platform, rather than an autonomous on-chain protocol.
Value Creation
The productive activity (custody, credit underwriting/risk management, and administering interest programmes) is performed in Nexo’s off-chain operational stack.
Value Capture
Value is primarily captured off-chain through Nexo’s platform business model, but the system routes value to NEXO token holders via (i) interest distribution to NEXO holders and (ii) disclosed buyback programmes that acquire NEXO and hold it in the Investor Protection Reserve (an on-chain address), creating a hybrid routing pattern.
Governance
The operator (Nexo) retains binding control over key system components (product configuration, custody, underwriting, and programme rules), so governance is entity-led at the system level.
