Pocket Network (POKT)

System: Pocket Network — Storage and Indexing

Pocket Network provides decentralised remote procedure call (RPC) and open-data access for applications that need reliable blockchain and application programming interface (API) data. The network originated in 2017, launched its original mainnet in 2020, and now operates the Shannon protocol, launched in 2025, using Cosmos SDK and CometBFT. The system boundary includes Shannon chain modules, native POKT accounting, staking, relay settlement, governance processes, RelayMiner software, Gateway routing infrastructure, Applications, Suppliers, Gateways, Validators, Source Owners, the Pocket decentralised autonomous organisation (DAO), and Pocket Network Foundation (PNF) components, where they hold material execution or implementation roles.

Token Functionalities

Service Provision

  • Data Handling: Access Gateway/Request Routing

Right to operate a gateway and request-routing layer by staking POKT, accepting Application delegations, signing and routing relay requests, and providing quality-of-service, load-balancing and failover functions. The right covers routing rather than supplying the underlying data source.

  • Data Processing: Data Indexing

Right to supply on-demand access to already published blockchain or API data by staking POKT as a Supplier, running infrastructure, serving relays and submitting claims or proofs. The token gates the supply-side role that delivers the core RPC/open-data service.

  • State Transition Execution and Transaction Sequencing

Right to validate and propose Pocket Network blocks by staking or delegating POKT into the Validator set. The right is tied to securing and operating the POKT chain rather than passively holding the token.

Governance

  • Technical Parameter Control (Partial)

Right to participate in protocol-change decisions through Pocket Improvement Proposal-style governance processes, subject to DAO process, PNF implementation and validator/operator adoption. The right influences technical direction, but it is not unilateral because major changes depend on implementation and network participant adoption.

  • Process and Meta Parameter Control (Partial)

Right to participate in decisions modifying governance process and decision rules through the stake-weighted Staker House component and broader DAO process. POKT-linked participants influence governance design, but process authority is shared with other governance components and implemented through constrained execution paths.

  • Treasury Control (Partial)

Right to participate in DAO treasury and funding decisions through the POKT-linked Staker House component of CREDS governance. The token contributes to treasury decision-making, but treasury control is not held unilaterally by passive POKT holders and operates through the broader DAO and implementation structure.

  • Actor Set Permissioning (Partial)

Right to join or re-weight protocol actor sets by staking as an Application, Supplier or Gateway, or by delegating POKT to Validators. Individual registration and delegation are token-enabled, but POKT holders do not unilaterally appoint, remove or control the entire privileged actor set.

  • Economic Design/Parameter Control (Partial)

Right to participate in decisions over economic parameters, including mint ratio, reward routing, staking requirements, relay pricing and penalty parameters. Token-linked governance affects economic design, but execution and scope are constrained by the wider DAO structure, PNF implementation and operator dependencies.

Membership

  • Usage Quota Uplift

Right to higher service capacity or usage allowance by increasing the Application POKT stake. The token does not merely pay for usage; the amount staked also affects the Application’s entitlement to consume service before capacity limits or additional requirements apply.

Payments

  • Native Resource Fee (Strong)

Right to consume protocol-controlled data-relay resources by staking and burning POKT for relays measured in Compute Units. POKT is the native settlement asset for accessing the network’s core resource, and the protocol enforces burn and settlement through its own cryptoeconomics.

Collateral

  • Performance-Bond

Right to post POKT as a performance bond for Validator roles and, more narrowly, for Supplier proof obligations, with Validator stake exposed to slashing for double-signing or extended downtime and Supplier stake exposed to a live proof-missing penalty when a required proof is not submitted.

Value Distribution

  • Burn Entitlement (Algorithmic or Guaranteed)

Right to benefit from increased percentage ownership as network usage burns POKT and remints less than the burned amount. The benefit accrues through protocol-defined supply reduction rather than a discretionary dividend, revenue share or third-party reward programme.
