Hivemapper (HONEY)

System: Hivemapper — Trusted Data and Identity

Hivemapper is a decentralised mapping data network that delivers street-level imagery and map features to data customers. Founded in 2015, customers consume Hivemapper data products using Map Credits, with coordination handled via Solana programmes alongside off-chain data capture, processing, and delivery infrastructure. The system boundary includes the HONEY token contracts and associated off-chain infrastructure, while excluding Solana base-layer governance and third-party trading venues.

Token Functionalities

Payments

  • Native Resource Fee (Strong)

Right to generate non-transferable Map Credits by burning HONEY, where such credits are exclusively required to access core data products, including imagery and map features, thereby linking product consumption directly to token destruction through protocol-defined mint-and-burn mechanics.

Value Distribution

  • Burn Entitlement (Algorithmic or Guaranteed)

Right to benefit from increased percentage token ownership as a result of system operations that consistently and permanently burn a share of HONEY redeemed for Map Credits

System Attributes

Operating Model

Day-to-day service delivery depends on off-chain activities such as hardware distribution, data capture and processing, and product delivery, while token accounting and mint and burn flows for HONEY are executed and enforced on-chain.

Value Creation

Value creation in the Hivemapper system is primarily off-chain. The core outputs, including mapping imagery and derived map features, are produced through data capture and subsequent off-chain processing and packaging into products, with consumption mediated via Map Credits rather than on-chain computation.

Value Capture

Value is captured off-chain when customers purchase Map Credits via fiat from the Hivemapper Foundation (including a transaction/processing fee), and then routed on-chain as the Foundation buys HONEY and burns it to generate Map Credits; the burn-and-mint design then routes a defined share of value back into the cryptoeconomic system via re-minted rewards to contributors while permanently burning the remainder, linking customer demand to token supply and distribution dynamics.

Governance

Governance changes are driven by an off-chain MIP process coordinated by the Hivemapper Foundation, with current documentation explicitly noting that voting-based governance is a longer-term direction rather than the primary mechanism today.
