Give your assistant a research analyst

Fundamentals turns structured cryptoeconomic research — token functionalities, strengths, sector classifications, system attributes — into something an AI assistant can query as you chat. Instead of an assistant guessing about a token from whatever it half-remembers, it pulls the real profile from fundamentals.fyi, reasons in our framework, and cites the exact page it used.

Ask "how strong is Aave's governance, and how does it compare to MKR?" and your assistant fetches both profiles, lays them side by side on our strength scales, and links you back to the source. It's the depth of the dashboard, delivered inside the assistant you already work in.

This works through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that lets AI clients connect to external tools and data. Fundamentals runs a hosted MCP server; you connect to it once, and it's available in every chat.

What it can do

When connected, your assistant can:

  • Look up a token — its system, sector, token functionalities with strengths and scope (endogenous/exogenous), and market data.
  • Look up a system/project — operating model, value creation and capture, governance, and the tokens within it.
  • Compare tokens side by side across functionalities and system attributes.
  • Browse and filter — list tokens by sector, system, functionality, or strength.
  • Rank — "which tokens have the strongest Governance?" — leaderboards over our structured judgments, something a plain model can't compute.
  • Explore the sector taxonomy and get sector overviews.
  • Ground itself in the framework — retrieve our classification vocabulary so answers use our definitions.

Everything is read-only and sourced: each result carries a canonical fundamentals.fyi link the assistant is asked to cite.

Things to ask it

Once you're connected, try:

  • "What are Aave's token functionalities, and how strong is its governance?"
  • "Compare UNI, AAVE, and MKR on value distribution."
  • "Which tokens have the strongest Governance functionality?"
  • "What's in the Trading and Exchange sector?"
  • "Explain how Fundamentals classifies Value Distribution, then rank tokens by it."

Before you start

You'll need two things:

  1. A free Fundamentals account. MCP access is tied to an account — there's no anonymous access. If you don't have one, create it at fundamentals.fyi/login. It takes a minute.
  2. An AI client that supports custom MCP connectors. Claude and ChatGPT both do, on plans that allow adding custom connectors (see the per-client notes below). Other MCP-capable clients work too — the same URL connects them all.

Connecting uses OAuth: you sign in with your Fundamentals account and approve access in a normal login window. Your password is never shared with the assistant — it only receives a scoped, revocable access token.

The connector URL is:

Connect Claude

Custom connectors are available on Claude's paid plans (for example Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise).

  1. Open Settings (your name / avatar → Settings).
  2. Go to Connectors.
  3. Click Add custom connector (you may need to expand an "Advanced" or "Developer" area first).
  4. Paste the connector URL — https://fundamentals.fyi/mcp/oauth — and give it a name like "Fundamentals". Confirm.
  5. Claude opens a Fundamentals sign-in window. Log in with your account and approve access. The window closes and the connector shows as connected.
  6. Start a new chat. Ask a token question — for example, "Using Fundamentals, what are Uniswap's token functionalities?" Claude will call the connector and cite a fundamentals.fyi link.

If you don't see the connector being used, make sure it's enabled for the conversation (Claude exposes a toggle for connectors/tools in the chat), then ask again.

Connect ChatGPT

ChatGPT supports custom connectors on its paid plans; availability and the exact location depend on your plan and whether connector/developer features are turned on for your account.

  1. Open Settings → Connectors (on some plans this lives under a "Connectors" or "Apps" area, and may require enabling developer/connector features first).
  2. Choose to add a custom connector / remote MCP server.
  3. Paste the connector URL — https://fundamentals.fyi/mcp/oauth — and confirm.
  4. Complete the OAuth sign-in: a Fundamentals login window opens; sign in and approve access.
  5. In a chat, make sure the Fundamentals connector is enabled/selected, then ask a Fundamentals question.

ChatGPT is stricter than most clients about the connector standard. Use the URL exactly as shown (https://fundamentals.fyi/mcp/oauth) — the login and discovery steps are handled automatically once you paste it.

Other MCP clients

Any client that supports remote (streamable-HTTP) MCP servers with OAuth can connect to Fundamentals. Wherever the client lets you add a custom or remote MCP server by URL, use:

The client will discover the sign-in flow automatically and prompt you to authenticate with your Fundamentals account.

Menu names and the exact location of connector settings change as these products evolve. If the labels above don't match what you see, look for wherever your client lets you add a custom or remote MCP connector by URL — the URL and the account sign-in are the only parts that matter.

Troubleshooting

"Authentication required" or it keeps asking me to sign in.
MCP access needs a Fundamentals account. Create or sign into one at fundamentals.fyi/login, then reconnect the server in your assistant. If you're stuck in a sign-in loop, remove the connector and add it again so it starts a fresh OAuth flow.

The assistant answers without using Fundamentals.
Assistants call connectors only when they judge them relevant. Nudge it — "using the Fundamentals connector, …" — and check the connector is enabled for that conversation.

"Rate limit exceeded."
Access is rate-limited per account as a fair-use measure. Normal research won't hit it; if you do, wait the indicated time and retry.

A token or system isn't found.
Try a search-style question first ("search Fundamentals for …") or use the ticker or full name. The dataset covers published research on fundamentals.fyi; coverage grows over time.
